The Journey

Sound Fragments #1 plunges into the migratory journey. But what does it mean to travel, to emigrate, to leave one’s country for elsewhere? What situations must be faced? What emotions, experiences and sensations are produced by the experience of transit, of the non-place? How do they survive in memory? What fragments remain?

This sound journey begins with the poem “Llar” (Home) by Warsan Shire.

“You have to understand,” says the Somali poet, “that no one puts their children in a boat unless the water is safer than the land.”

Why do young people risk their lives to cross the sea? Mohamed shares the challenges and dangers he had to face.

The artist Fares Yessad depicts such situations in his work MURAL/LOCAL 2021: a drawing of the journey that he represented, as he explains, like a game. A very real game, with no possible choice, where the only path young Algerians find to change their lives lies on the sea.
The shared stories thus speak of uncertainty, strangeness and shame.

The journey is tinged with multiple sensations. Arrival in Barcelona reveals colours: images traced in sepia, blue or yellow; memories of sky, sea and sun.
The journey creates melodies. It is wrapped in sounds that change, move and write our everyday life.

The narratives speak of objects, essential companions of the journey, linking places, people and feelings.
We are enveloped by sounds that change, move and draw our everyday life.

A choral, itinerant and multilingual map, creating listening processes that critically address the hegemonic narrative of migration, recognise transit as a form of knowledge and claim every person’s right to have rights.

Languages

Fragments sonores #2 Sound Fragments #2 deals with languages, moves through language and focuses on words. But what importance does language take on when one migrates? What memories return with words I no longer use? Where does language carry me? How can I express myself in a language that does not recognise the place I come from?

Words are multiple, and their meanings are multiple. Their polysemy is constructed through contexts.

Language lends itself to equivocation and produces surprises. It affirms the existence of diverse accents and a plurality of ways of expressing reality.

Languages also build affects. They become nostalgia for lost words, shaping memories. They carry us back to an earlier time, to a shared space which, though blurred, remains very present in memory. They weave threads that shorten distances with the past.

We want to connect sounds from different geographical points, cities and countries. To share narratives that recognise the migration of words, the itinerancy of language and the plurality of languages. A space of listening and dialogue to collectively build a choral map in transit.

Voicemail

Sound Fragments #3 explores the different means that exist, or have existed, to communicate experiences lived through migration.

From the moment we write a letter to the moment it reaches the recipient’s mailbox, days or months may pass; then we remember how far we are from home.

There are multiple forms available to us for communication, all animated by the intention to maintain bonds with loved ones and overcome the distance that separates us.

How can we be present in their lives by sharing our daily life from another place? How does a message cross territory and sea to reach its recipient? What is told in an email or voice message?

Today, telephony allows us to send and receive audios or messages instantly. Does this immediacy really bring us closer? What power do messages left by a voice have? How do these murmurs travel from mouth to ear? What emotion do they convey when heard? What memories do written words conceal? What images travel in a text, in the rustle of reading?…

These are fragments that connect sounds, stories and affects from different geographical points, cities and countries. Thus a space of listening and dialogue is created, in several languages, to collectively weave a choral map in transit.
